A thrifted pot and three herb plants make a wonderful gift for Mom

It’s no wonder that we celebrate mothers during the month of May. There is a distinct shift in the air as the soil warms, baby birds and animals are born, and the spring garden begins to offer its first promise of the coming bounty.

While a bouquet of flowers is a lovely gesture, there is a deeper, more lasting connection found in gifting something grown and/or handmade.

Herbal gifts offer a sensory experience that cut flowers simply can’t match. They provide scent, flavor, and healing properties that linger long after the holiday has passed.

Laurie Zerga, Chef-K founder, says that growing herbs is the gateway to vegetable gardening.  She shared, “There’s something so rewarding about pinching a few of your own herbs and adding them to a salad or stir fry. They provide scent, flavor, and healing properties that linger long after the holiday has passed.”

If you’re looking for a thoughtful, hands-on project this year, here are three herbal gift ideas that celebrate the season and the mothers in your life.

The Culinary “Living Bouquet”

Instead of a temporary floral arrangement, create a functional centerpiece.

  • Select a pretty ceramic pot or a rustic wooden crate. Thrift stores are great resources for this.
  • Choose a collection of Mediterranean herbs like upright rosemary, variegated sage, and several varieties of thyme. Depending on the size of your container buy three or four small plants in 4” pots.
  • Remove plants from the plastic pots and arrange them in the container.
  • Water thoroughly so the plants can settle into their new home.
  • Add embellishments like a small card attached to a skewer.

The trick to making this look professional is “thrillers, fillers, and spillers.” Use the rosemary for height, the sage for texture, and let the thyme drape over the edges. It’s a gift that transitions perfectly from the patio table to the kitchen counter, providing fresh harvests for family dinners all summer long.

Later, the plants can then be transplanted into a larger pot or directly into the ground where Mom will be able to enjoy for years to come.

Hand-Blended Herbal Tea Tins

If you have a store nearby that sells bulk herbs making Mom a personalized tea blend is easy and fun. It’s also possible to order bulk herbs online. Mountain Rose Herbs is a well-respected source for all herbal items, including lovely tea tins to complete your tea blend gift. A couple of sophisticated and personal tea blends for mom include:

  • The “Relaxation” Blend: Mix dried lemon balm, chamomile flowers, and a hint of lavender.
  • The “Bright Morning” Blend: Combine dried peppermint with dehydrated lemon peel and calendula petals.

Package in small, airtight tins or jars with a hand-drawn label and decorate with a small sprig of fresh mint or lavender for an artisanal touch.

Calendula and Herb-Infused Body Oil

Calendula – the workhorse of the herbal garden.

Calendula is often called the “mother of the garden” for its soothing, skin-healing properties. To make a simple infusion, fill a clean glass jar halfway with dried calendula petals and a few sprigs of dried lemon verbena. Top the jar with a high-quality carrier oil like sweet almond or jojoba oil.

Place the infusion in a dark, warm spot for about 10 days. A shortcut: gently warm the oil and flower mixture, making sure to avoid overheating. Let cool and sit for four hours. Strain the oil through cheesecloth into a glass dropper bottle. It’s a luxurious, chemical-free way to bring the garden’s healing energy into a daily self-care routine.

Whether you are building a backyard habitat together or sharing a quiet cup of tea, these projects are a reminder that the best gifts are those that grow. Happy Mother’s Day to all the nurturers and gardeners among us!
